How to create a draw string bag.

  • 1/3 yard main fabric
  • 1/3 yard lining fabric
  • 1/3 yard Medium Weight Fusible Interfacing (i.e. Pellon 931TD)
  • 1-1/2 yard 3/8”-1/2” Twill Tape

  • Cut 1 piece of fabric at 11” x 20”
  • Cut 2 pieces of fabric at 11” x 10”
  • Cut 1 piece of Interfacing at 11” x 20”
  • Cut 2 pieces of twill tape at 25”
  • Iron all pieces of fabric, then iron fusible interfacing to back of main fabric
  • Pin lining fabric to the main fabric and stitch together at either end
  • Press seams open
  • Fold in half right sides together with both lining fabrics together then pin together leaving a 4” opening space centered at the end of the lining fabrics for turning right side out
  • Mark lines for draw strings at 1-1/2” and 2-1/2” on both sides from seam
  • Sew together starting at opening space around remembering to leave the areas between the marks open for the draw strings and turning, being mindful to backstitch at the beginning and end of each stitch area
  • Press all seams open and flat making sure that the side seams are open for easy access for draw stings
  • Open corner up with seams aligning on both sides and mark a line at 3” across at a 45 degree angle on all 4 corners being mindful that all seams are flat
  • Sew across all 4 corners and trim off excess fabric 1/2” from seam
  • Using the opening left for turning at the bottom of the lining fabric, turn right side out pushing corners out
  • Top stitch opening for turning closed close to the edge
  • Iron the top edge of the bag flat for a crisp edge
  • Stitch at 1-1/2” and 2-1/2” from top around for draw strings
  • Feed twill tape through the openings left for drawstring all the way around starting each piece from opposite sides using a bodkin or safety pin
  • Tie ends together in a knot on both pieces of twill tape to finish
